1982 – Expansion Plans Announced for the Growing Campus

A Historic Moment for Mid-America Christian University

Mid-America Christian University (MACU), known at the time as South Texas Bible Institute, celebrated a monumental occasion this past weekend—its first-ever graduating class. On June 5, 1954, the university held its inaugural commencement ceremony, marking the beginning of a legacy that will shape future generations.
The event, held in the main chapel, brought together students, faculty, and community members who have supported the institution since its founding in 1953. The air was filled with a mix of pride and anticipation as graduates stepped forward to receive their diplomas, signifying the culmination of their academic and spiritual journey.

A Vision Realized: The Founding of MACU

Just a year ago, Dr. William J. Cameron, the university’s first president, shared his vision of an institution dedicated to faith-centered education. His dream was to create a place where young men and women could deepen their biblical knowledge, academic skills, and leadership abilities to serve their communities and ministries.
The first class, though small in number, represented a significant milestone in turning this vision into reality. These students paved the way for what is now a growing institution dedicated to excellence in education and service.

The Class of 1954: A Legacy Begins

The Class of 1954 consisted of 12 graduates, each earning a diploma in biblical studies and ministry leadership. Among them were:
Sarah Jennings – Valedictorian, passionate about youth ministry
James Mitchell – Future church planter, heading to Oklahoma for missionary work
Mary Carter – Aspiring educator, planning to teach at a Christian school
Robert Stevens – Music director and worship leader, known for composing the school’s alma mater
Despite the small class size, the impact of these graduates will be felt across churches, schools, and ministries for years to come.
